As a final send-off to the King of Pop from us here at Youku, here's a great dance vid that's recently found its way to the site. The only information we have on this is that it was recorded two years ago at the culrure festival of the Guiyang Normal University's affiliate high school (贵阳师大附中). We think you'll agree that this kid has seriously good moves. |
Peng Cong, an ordinary Telecoms Bureau officer from Chongqing, has invested 150,000 RMB in the past 6 years for his extraordinary project -- to make an airplane! The most unbelievable part is, his monthly salary is only 2,000 RMB. The airplane you can see in the video is 5.5m long and 10m wide. The highest speed is 100km/h. The height limit is 4km. It burns 19 liters of diesel oil per hour — about twice an SUV. The airplane has been flight-tested for more than 100 hours… and it’s still flying! |

After being bumped by a passing bus, a woman lies bleeding just outside Peking Union Medical Hospital in eastern Beijing. Despite numerous calls, ambulances take more than half an hour to arrive, at which point she's finally put on a gurney. Is Beijing traffic to blame? Debate is ferocious in the 28,000+ comments to this video, which has been viewed more than 3.3 million times. |
建国大业, no official English title yet, translated as "The Great Cause of Building New China" by CCTV.com. It's a dinosaur of a paean pic (or xianlipian, 献礼片) for China's 60th national day, and it features countless mainland and Hong Kong Chinese actors like Andy Lau (刘德华) and Jet Li as well as popular entertainers like cross-talk artist Guo Degang (郭德纲). The fact that they play only bit characters gives you some sense for just how big a production it is. Chinese netizens have dubbed it "the biggest paean pic all time". But director Han Sanping said at the press conference, we don't give a damn about the international market and that foreigners won't like this film, just like we don't care about American Civil War epics. The distributor is trying to release this film in Taiwan before October 1st. Don't know what they're thinking. Release date: Sep 17th. Another paean pic of note: Tian'anmen, with lots of CG sequences, looks good. |

For the last couple of months, the Chinese Internet has seen a massive controversy over Zeng Yike, a contestant on the American Idol-like show Super Girls. When two judges--producer Gao Xiaosong and indie label Modern Sky chief Shen Lvhui championed Zeng moving into the top 20 despite her, er, less than conventional vocal chops, it caused another judge to quit in anger, demanding that if she moved up, he'd move out. Gao and Shen, as well as many other supporters, argued that her songwriting ability should win her a berth in the finalist round, and this rendering of the song that made her (in)famous does seem to demonstrate that the song itself's not too bad. Here's the here. |
China's biggest video game expo, held annually in Shanghai, has gained a reputation (along with auto shows) for the booth babes. We're aware that many viewers regard this sort of thing as blatant, disgusting sexism that objectifies women, and so we present this in the spirit of evidence of that kind of chauvinistic behavior. |

Now You Have to Learn CodingA fantastic proposal video got circulated widely today on all the major Chinese SNS websites. A bunch of geeks help a guy propose, by making hundreds of mobile phones into a big LED displaying “I heart U”. Quite warm-hearted. But before your heart gets too warm, know that at the end of the video, it turns out to be a viral ad for IBM’s RSC 2009 Developer Conference. The slogan reads, “It’s amazing to develop!” Fantastic job, all the same! |
